Dead on Arrival?

People want HM the King and Samdech Euv weight in the affair of the lifting of immunity of the 3 SRP MPs. So Samdech Euv proposed the following 5 points to bring about an amicable solution:

  1. Ranariddh and Hun Sen, as "good Buddhists and wise statesmen"
should declare that they grant their "pardon to those who have hurt
    [them]".
  2. The parliamentary immunity of Sam Rainsy, Cheam Channy and Chea
    Poch should be immediately reinstated.
  3. All lawsuits filed by political leaders against each other should
    be dropped.
  4. King Norodom Sihamoni, who is also the Supreme Commander of the
Armed Forces, will officially grant his pardon to Cheam Channy, who
should be released [from jail] and become again a full-fledged
    member of the National Assembly.
  5. This National Reconciliation scheme is to be implemented with the
understanding that the SRP will remain an opposition party within
    our Parliament.

The original proposal in French can be found at

The ball is now in the Strongman's court. What is he going to do?

Does this proposal is good compromise? If we want to see the country prosper, it's time for these lordships to take care of the country instead of wasting time with personal vendettas.

To show the Khmer people that they're clean, they must declare their assets now. Is it too much to ask for public figures?

Que Sera Sera.

Cambodia's ex-king calls for restoring opposition leader's immunity
PHNOM PENH : Cambodia's former king Norodom Sihanouk called for the release of a jailed opposition MP and an end to the political battle that has seen two other lawmakers flee the country.

In an open letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen and Prince Norodom Ranariddh -- the king's son who is president of the National Assembly -- the former monarch called for reconciliation in the political fight that has drawn international condemnation.

The letter, written in French and released on his website, called on the two leaders to "forgive those who have harmed you and committed injustices against you."

The former king also called for the restoration of immunity from prosecution for opposition leader Sam Rainsy and two of his deputies, who were stripped of the privilege February 3 in a closed-door vote of parliament.

He said all charges against the three, and their counter-claims, should be dropped, while sitting King Norodom Sihamoni should pardon jailed MP Cheam Channy.

The ex-king also called for "realization once again of national reconciliation, with it well understood that the Sam Rainsy Party will remain an opposition party at the heart of our parliament."

A Cambodian prosecutor told AFP on Friday that formal defamation charges have been filed against opposition lawmaker Chea Poch.

He stands accused of claiming that Ranariddh accepted a 30-million-dollar bribe to join Hun Sen's coalition government. If convicted, he could face up to one month in jail.

Chea Poch fled to the United States last week after parliament stripped him of his immunity from prosecution.

Opposition leader Rainsy fled to France last week while Cheam Channy was arrested and charged in a military court with raising armed forces to overthrow the government -- charges diplomats have scoffed at.

  • As expected February 11, 2005, the Strongman and SKP wrote to Samdech Euv, the King-Father, rejecting the 5-point proposal. They claimed that it's in the hands of the court to decide.

Are they willing to let the court be independent? Are they willing to have the court go through the process with pressure and interference from the Strongman?

It's time then for SR to prove to the world that his accusations got merit by sharing with the whole word the documents implicating SKP in corruption cases.

  • First of all it is time for cambodian to realize that our country is a big joke to the world for having MPs and kings of another nationality. Anyone who want to be leader in Cambodia should relinquish their present nationality become Cambodian and Cambodian only. This would prevent any of them to make irrational stupid mistakes because they have easy escape routes out of the country. They should be accountable and not run away from their responsibilities when they desire. This is one of the main problems in Cambodian politic.
